One Times Square is the name of a skyscraper in Times Square in New York City . It was originally called The Times Tower .

The house Times Square No. 1 (as the translation into German) was built from 1903-1905 to designs by the architect Cyrus LW Eidlitz as a publishing and commercial building for the New York Times . At 25 floors and 110 meters tall, it was one of the tallest buildings in New York when it opened. In 1928, the Times Square Ticker is a precursor of the huge, surrounding the building news ticker of the company Dow Jones taken for financial news in operation.

As early as 1913, the New York Times was largely relocated to another building . Until 1961 the newspaper publisher still operated a classifieds department here. In 1961, One Times Square was sold and then optically changed significantly. The narrow side facing Times Square is clad with oversized billboards and LED screens; nothing has been preserved from the original facade.

The bottom three floors are now used as a Walgreens pharmacy. Above that, the building has been uninhabited since 1996, because the costs of bringing it up to date in terms of air conditioning would be too high, and with the acute-angled floor plan, the rental income would be lower than with today's use as a carrier for large-format billboards.

Since 1907, the glowing Times Square Ball has been lowered from the building's flagpole at the turn of the year . This ball drop begins 60 seconds before midnight and is one of the highlights of the US New Year celebrations. The newest sphere has a diameter of 4 meters.

On June 23, 2019, Nik Wallenda and Lijana Wallenda crossed Times Square on a 400 meter long rope stretched between One Times Square and Two Times Square at a height of around 80 meters in the opposite direction. When ordered by the authorities, they used a safety rope.
