Onkios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Onkios ( Greek  Ὄγκιος , also Ὄγκος Onkos ) was in Greek mythology a son of Apollo and ruler of Onkeion near Thelphusa in Arcadia .

He owned large herds of horses, among which the goddess Demeter mingled in the form of a mare in order to escape the stalking of her brother Poseidon , who turned into a stallion and raped Demeter. From this connection came the goddess Despoina and the wonder horse Areion , which Onkios later gave to Herakles when he went against the Eleans .
