Online Contest (Aviation)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The online contest (abbreviation: OLC ) is a decentralized popular sport competition in aviation that has existed since 1999. Participants in the competition complete cross-country flights in the areas of gliding , hang-gliding , paragliding or with model gliders . Pilots invite after landing the GPS - track log and barogram their flight to the OLC website where the flights in the national or international rating received - for example, the longest or fastest flight.

History and basic principles

The online contest was founded in 1998 by Reiner Rose on a private initiative.

The initiative and the rules of the competition behind it have been recognized by the International Gliding Commission (IGC) as the official form of evaluation for decentralized glider flying competitions .

The Online Contest (OLC) is characterized by the following two basic principles:

  1. The OLC is organized by a very small core team, which consists exclusively of committed volunteers.
  2. There is no entry fee for participating in the OLC. This is mainly possible through donations from many sponsors. In addition, every single OLC participant can support the system with an annual voluntary contribution and enjoy additional benefits. These essentially consist of extended analysis options and the display of a smiley next to the respective pilot's name.

In 2014 the World Air Sports Association ( FAI) accepted the OLC as a member with the status of "International Affiliate Member of FAI / IGC".

functionality

  • After landing, the pilot loads the recorded GPS track log and the barogram onto his PC using a special, certified program or directly via the OLC website. The GPS track log and barogram are located in the data records of the IGC file recorded by the so-called logger .
  • By uploading the track to the online contest server, the calculation of the furthest route and, if applicable, the cheapest turning points of the flight is carried out and evaluated. Obvious manipulations on the track are checked.
  • The flights entered are immediately included in the corresponding ranking lists (individual & club, national & international).
  • The tracks can be checked by a jury and, if necessary, declared invalid if certain requirements are not met.
  • All flights can be viewed by anyone on the Internet . The desired tracks can also be downloaded to the PC and displayed and analyzed using special software . The flights can also be viewed in Google Earth .

A relatively young and new variant of a decentralized distance gliding competition is the team competition of the German soaring league that was launched in 2001. From the end of April, glider pilots will fly 19 laps across the country, on Saturdays and Sundays, for the points. The 3 fastest flights of a club are taken into account, with the calculation of the speed on a maximum of four flight legs in a time window of 2.5 hours and this section being evaluated with an aircraft index.

The OLC-League is flown to different countries around the world. In Germany, the 1st Bundesliga (30 clubs), the 2nd Bundesliga (30 clubs) as well as the qualification league (approx. 500 clubs) and the respective national league of the 16 federal states have been rated since 2004.

U25 league

The U25 league was founded in 2014 to enable young people under the age of 25 to have their own rating. In the first year, the Celle aviation association won the youth championship, in 2015 the Sindelfingen aviation association succeeded. The Königsdorf gliding center has dominated the youth scene since 2016 and achieved the master hat trick early in 2018.

IGC-OLC World League

As a further development of the national leagues, the first worldwide decentralized rating was started in April 2006, in which all teams of a country are summarized in an international rating per round, including those of the second German Bundesliga and the qualifying league. Up to 1100 teams worldwide take part in this league. The ranking is based on the OLC league speed. While in the German Bundesliga the winner receives 20, the second 19 points, etc. (from 20th place everyone receives one point), in the World League it is 40 points for the winner. The previous world champions mostly come from the USA. The winners from Germany so far have been the AeroClub Langenselbold (2008), the Fliegergruppe Blaubeuren (2011), the Luftsportgemeinschaft Bayreuth (2015), the Luftsportverein Burgdorf (2016) and the Luftsportring Aalen (2017). The five-time record champion is Albuquerque Soaring from New Mexico / USA (today's name: Moriarty Soaring).

Alpine League

In 2015 the OLC committee followed the request of the alpine clubs from Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France for their own evaluation. For this purpose, the flight must be flown for the most part in a polygon encompassing the Alps. The Königsdorf gliding center has dominated this league since the beginning and in 2018 celebrated the championship title for the fourth time in a row. For the third time in a row, the sailing and model building club Kirchdorf / Micheldorf from Upper Austria also wins the runner-up. The largest glider club in Switzerland, the glider group Lägern, can also fly the bronze medal for the third time in 2018.

OLC for model gliders

In February 2011, the ModelGliding-OLC division began testing the OLC platform for model gliders .
