History and facts

The association consists of around 300 members who take off from the Bayreuth- Bindlacher Berg airfield and the Bindlacher Berg model airfield a little further north. The club was founded on September 2, 1950 and is divided into three sports groups for the three sports. The LSG maintains a clubhouse at both the airfield and the model airfield.

Gliding

The gliding group currently operates five gliders of the types Duo Discus xT, LS-4 , LS-8 , and ASK 21 , further comprising a G 109 - motor gliders and a towing aircraft Robin DR400 "Remorqueur". A Skylaunch 2 system is also available for winch starts. The LSG also conducts training to become a glider pilot with eleven volunteer flight instructors. Every year around five student pilots aged 14 and over are trained to fly solo.

In the Bundesliga of the Online Contest (OLC), the drivers from LSG Bayreuth have been in the top group from the start. In 2001 the Bayreuth team came third in the first edition of this decentralized competition and in 2002 they won the title. In 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010 they became vice-champions. The Bundesliga pilots reached their peak in 2015 when they won the Bundesliga and IGC World League. In 2018 the team was able to repeat this double success. With the descent of the Mannheim Glider Club in 2010, the LSG Bayreuth is now the only club in Germany that has been in the top group of the 1st Glider League from the start. In 2015, LSG was only the third German club to win the Gliding World League.

In addition, the gliding group regularly organizes large competitions. In 1999 the open, racing and standard class world championships took place at the Bayreuth airfield. The German Holger Karow was the world champion of the open. The Germans also won as a team. Since then, qualification championships for the DM have been held regularly in Bayreuth. The competition in 2006 with 97 participants received more qualifying places than any other competitor championship that year. She was also one of only two for the Open Class. Also in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 qualification championships with almost 100 participating pilots took place at LSG Bayreuth.

The excellent geographical and meteorological location is also used by numerous guest groups every summer, i.e. other clubs that spend their air camp on Bindlacher Berg.

The powered flight group operates three Cessna 172 RG powered aircraft and two Katana . All meet noise protection standards such as the " Blue Angel "; the Cessna is equipped with an autopilot .
