Uncle Ho is a band from Wuppertal that was founded in 1994 as a school band. It is mainly assigned to the crossover .

history

Julian Hanebeck and Jens Schmidt ("Doc") founded the band in 1994, initially using a drum machine as a substitute for drums. Then Björn Krüger joined them, and her first record Tilt was released shortly afterwards, still under the full band name Uncle Ho Deflowers Lunch , on Subway Records. The cover design often wrongly called the album Deflowers Lunch, as the full name was hardly ever used colloquially.

Then they often played in front of an audience, including in 1997 in the opening act for Smashing Pumpkins . In the same year they released their second album Small Is Beautiful , which was not very successful commercially, whereupon the record label terminated the contract with the band.

In 1999 the American label Risk Records offered them a recording contract. In the United States, they received positive reviews from critics. Her fame rose not least through airplay on local and college radio stations.

Thereupon they played in Germany among other things in the opening act of bands like the Guano Apes , Goldfinger or the H-Blockx , to which they have a closer connection.

Sony / Columbia Records became aware of the band and released the album Show Them What You Are Made Of in 2001 together with the band . This album is also considered her breakthrough in Germany. The released singles Come On, Come Clean and I Don't Care If You Like Me are often played on music television.

In 2003 they themselves produced their fourth album Everything Must Be Destroyed and then announced their breakup ahead of time in order to develop musically. During this time, Jens Schmidt left the band prematurely and was replaced by guest guitarist Thorsten Sala. After an extensive tour, the band gave their last concert on October 30, 2004 in the Haus der Jugend (LCB) in Wuppertal.

In July 2010 Uncle Ho reported back after their six-year hiatus and announced their comeback concert and a new album for November 19, 2010. This should maintain a harder style and create a connection to their hometown Wuppertal. At the same time, they distanced themselves from playing with Uncle Ho again in front of a larger audience and going on tour. For her, the main reason is the fun of music and memories of her old days. On September 6, 2010 the band gave an interview to an online magazine and exclusively played a new song live. The official comeback concert announced for November 19, 2010 at the LCB had to be postponed to February 26, 2011 due to delayed renovation work at the venue.

On September 14, 2012 Uncle Ho released the single Terror Takes Shape under their new label Smarten-Up . The music video for the song "Terror Takes Shape", shot on July 28, 2012, was released on December 5, 2012 on YouTube.

style

Over time, the style of the band changed significantly. While the style on the first album Tilt was very much characterized by minimalist hip-hop beats and spoken word, this already changed with the second album Small Is Beautiful . On their third album, Show Them What You Are Made Of , the band completely renounced the spoken word. From then on, the songs became more melodic and significantly more rock-heavy.
