As a signal generator are electronic devices, assemblies or circuits indicated that generate electrical voltages with a characteristic time. Signal generator is the generic term for all signal generating generators.

species

Simple oscillator circuits for the low frequency range (LF, audio range and sound engineering ) are usually referred to as tone generators .

Function generators are generally called those signal generators that generate various simple, periodic signals. Mostly these are sine , square and triangular waves . The respective generators are called sine , square and triangle generators . Better devices can also generate needle pulses , rising and falling edges (triangular and sawtooth waves ), signals composed of them as tonal signals and various noise signals , for example white or 1 / f noise .

Signal generators for high-frequency sinusoidal oscillations are also known as measuring transmitters . These often have a wobble function to repeatedly run through a frequency range or offer the option of frequency and amplitude modulation .

So-called arbitrary generators can be edited to generate any pulse shape. They contain a digital oscillator and work with fast digital-to-analog converters , which output the pulse shape stored as data.

Computer as a signal generator

With the appropriate software , a computer can also be used as a signal generator by using its sound card with its digital-to-analog converter for signal output in the simplest case .
