The Ontario Place is a theme park in the Canadian Toronto . The park is located on three man-made islands in Lake Ontario , about 4 km west of downtown and south of Exhibition Place . In addition to water slides and wild water courses, the park offers a 70 mm IMAX cinema ( Cinesphere ) for 800 viewers housed in a geodesic dome . A large open air stage ( Molson Amphitheater ) was opened on the site in May 1995 , and many international artists have already performed there. There is a marina for about 240 boats at Ontario Place .
The construction of the Ontario Place goes back to the province of Ontario , which wanted to upgrade the Toronto waterfront in the 1960s and wanted to create a structural counterpoint to the structures of the Expo 67 in Montreal . Construction began on March 17, 1969; the cost at the time was $ 29 million. Architects were Eberhard Zeidler , Craig and Strong. The official opening took place on May 22, 1971 with an original area of 360,000 m². The area was later expanded to around 566,000 m² through land reclamation .
modernization
On February 1, 2012, the provincial government of Ontario, as the operator of the park, announced a modernization or conversion of the park, as visitor numbers were declining. It is planned to modernize the entire park in sections and to offer new attractions.
