OpShop is a New Zealand alternative rock band from Auckland .

Band history

The band was formed in 2002 from a joint appearance by Jason Kerrison , who was a solo singer in Auckland, and his long-time friend Tim Skedden. They were joined by drummer Bobby Kennedy and together with guitarist Matt Treacy and bassist Ian Munro they formed the original line-up of OpShop , which was initially called GST .

The following year they took part in a competition run by the ZM radio station, which they won. This was followed by the release of their debut single Saturated , with which they immediately had a respectable success in the New Zealand charts. The following debut album, You Are Here , also made it into the top 20 albums. Further popularity brought them the single No Ordinary Thing , in which they were supported on the piano by the successful singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser . After that, however, Skedden and Munro left the band and with the new bass player Clint Harris, the band continued with four.

OpShop had their big breakthrough in 2007 with the song Maybe . With 42 weeks in the New Zealand Top 40, it is one of the most successful songs on the charts in their homeland. The associated album Second Hand Planet entered the charts shortly afterwards at number 3 and after the second single One Day was also very successful, the album rose to number one in early 2008 . It stayed in the top 40 best-selling for 86 weeks, making it one of the most successful albums by a New Zealand artist. The album reached triple platinum status, the singles were awarded gold and platinum.

At Christmas 2008 they released the single Beside You , together with the singer-songwriter Anika Moa , which became their third top 10 hit. However, some time passed until the band's third album. Until the End of Time was released in summer 2010 and this time went straight to number one . Nevertheless, it could not quite build on the great success of its predecessor and none of the single releases reached the top 10 of the New Zealand charts.

At the end of 2010, band head Jason Kerrison had two smaller chart hits without a band as the accompanist for rapper K. One and radio DJ Mike Puru .
