OpenProj is a free project management software . It is intended to be a complete replacement for Microsoft Project . OpenProj runs on the Java platform , so it can be run on a variety of different operating systems .

On SourceForge announced that projectlibre OpenProj has replaced and represents its replacement.

History and current status

OpenProj was developed in 2007 by Marc O'Brien, Howard Katz and Laurent Chretienneau at Projity. With the release of version 1.0 on January 10, 2008, the project moved out of beta. In late 2008, Projity was bought by Serena Software .

From the beginning of 2009, support and communication between community and company about the development of OpenProj finally stagnated. It even came through a few CVS - commits to functional deterioration. There has been no improvement in the last four years and it is no longer compatible with Microsoft Project. It remains to be seen whether the software will remain open source under these economic conditions. In 2012, the founders of OpenProj announced that they would spin off the project and the release of a new version of OpenProj would take place in August 2012. The name of the fork is ProjectLibre (see below in the “Fork” section).

Functions

The current version of OpenProj includes:

popularity

The program has been downloaded over 4 million times from over 140 countries. Three months after the beta was released, SourceForge was downloading an average of 60,000 copies per month. With SourceForge activity averaging 99.964%, OpenProj was number 15 and was listed just before the popular instant messenger Pidgin . In May 2008, the total number of downloads on SourceForge reached 500,000.

Compared to Microsoft Project

Compared to Microsoft Project, OpenProj has a similar graphical user interface (GUI) and approach to building a project plan. There are small differences that take some getting used to for users who are used to Microsoft Project. For example, OpenProj cannot link up, and inserting tasks is more difficult than in Microsoft Project. OpenProj cannot create resources automatically; you have to create them in the resource sheet first. All in all, users of each of the two software solutions should also be able to cope with the other solution.

Licensing

Some functions of OpenProj are limited to users who have a commercial license. For users who want to use OpenProj free of charge, a slightly restricted version is available. A restriction in the free version of OpenProj (version 1.4) is, for example, that it is not allowed to export PDF files from the data ; the usefulness of such a function is questionable. However, there is the option of circumventing the reduced range of functions using external software.

Fork ProjectLibre

Recently, the original founders of OpenProj started developing a complementary server for OpenProj, similar to the Microsoft Project Server for Microsoft Project .

During development, they realized that the fact that OpenProj had not been updated by Serena Software for the past four years was problematic to their goal. So they first had to develop a significantly updated version of OpenProj. This version was in August 2012 as a spin-off (Fork) named projectlibre released. The additional server is currently (as of February 2013) still in development and will be called ProjectLibre Server .

ProjectLibre improves many of OpenProj's bugs and introduces new features such as:

  • Import and export with Microsoft Project 2010
  • To press
  • PDF export (without restrictions)
  • New ribbon user interface
  • Full compatibility with Microsoft Project 2010
