Open design

Open Design was a Turin- based design studio that was an independent service provider primarily for the automotive industry from 1977 to 1998. The company made design studies for car bodies and interiors.

Company history

Designed by Open Design: Seat 1200 Sport Coupé

Open Design was founded by industrial designer Aldo Sessano . Born in Turin, Sessano headed Fiats Centro Stile as chief designer from 1956 to 1968 . In 1968 he founded his own company, which should not be tied to a specific client. Its name Open Design was intended to document this openness to the outside world. Designers who worked for the company over the years included Paul Breuer, Aldo Garnero, Mike Robinson, and Fabio Filippini.

Until the 1980s, Open Design produced designs for De Tomaso , Fiat, Mitsubishi , Saab , Seat , Volvo and a few other manufacturers. Many designs were built as prototypes. For the Carrozzeria Fissore , Open Design designed the Fissore Mongho 650 , a sporty four-wheeled microcar based on the Fiat 500 that is reminiscent of the three-wheeled Bond Bug ; For OTAS , Sessano designed a hatchback coupé with the technology of the Autobianchi A112 , which took up the lines of the recently published AMC Gremlin . A coupé originally designed for NSU went into series production as the Seat 1200 Sport Coupé in 1975 . In the early 1980s, open design focused on aerodynamics studies. The Open Design Ipothesi, which was shown at the 1982 Turin Motor Show , was based on the Fiat Ritmo , while Open Design designed the Starwind for Mitsubishi at the same time.

In 1995 Open Design ceased operations.
