from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Operación Milagro (German: Operation Wunder ; also: Misión Milagro ) describes a plan agreed between the governments of Cuba and Venezuela to cure various eye diseases in the populations of the countries involved. It is integrated into the ALBA programs.

The plan envisages that around six million people with ophthalmological problems will be treated surgically over a period of 10 years . Started in Venezuela, it is also used in 31 other countries in Latin America , the Caribbean , Asia and Africa . As an extension of this program, clinics in Venezuela and Bolivia were set up with the help of Cuban medical staff , which enable free treatment of these diseases and thus allow better control and prevention.

165 Cuban institutions are involved in Operation Milagro. They provide a network of 49 centers in 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries where 82 eye diseases can be treated surgically. There are corresponding missions in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador , Haiti , Honduras , Panama , Guatemala , St. Vincent and the Grenadines , Guyana , Paraguay , Granada , Nicaragua and Uruguay .

In December 2007, Cuba celebrated the millionth patient regained or improved eyesight . By 2011 - the last available data for that year - the eyesight of more than two million people in 34 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa had been restored or improved.
