Operation Clean The Nation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Clean The Nation (OCN) or also known locally as Set Settal or Setal is a day of action in the West African state of Gambia .

It is proclaimed by the National Environment Agency (NEA), the national environmental agency , to help improve the garbage problem and is also part of a program to combat malaria .

The action will take place across the country on a Saturday when most businesses and schools are closed. Everyone is called upon to voluntarily clean the streets and public areas. In support of this, a general driving ban for all cars, including taxis, is imposed - which is monitored by the military. Only vehicles of the security forces, the government, the diplomatic corps, vehicles with special permits and of course the vehicles of the garbage collection are allowed to use the roads.

The promotion takes place every last Saturday of the month between 9:00 and 13:00.

Operation Clean The Nation was initiated by President Jammeh and first took place in 2004. A law to avoid waste, the anti-littering law, was last passed in 2007.

In addition to the visible traces of pollution , the aim is to keep the gutters free of debris so that they can fulfill their function of draining the street. This is especially important in the rainy season from mid-June to mid-October. If the draining water then accumulates in an uncontrolled manner due to rubbish, there are not only floods but also breeding grounds for numerous pathogens that can cause diarrheal diseases and malaria. That is why Operation Clean The Nation is part of the National Malaria Control Program.
