Operation Observant Compass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The operation Observant Compass is a military operation of the United States Africa Command , in particular the Special Operations Command and Control Element - Horn of Africa (HOA Socce), and SOCAFRICA . The aim of the operation is to contain the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in the Central African region. If possible, the US soldiers should not lead offensives against the LRA themselves, but rather train military personnel in the countries concerned. The dispatch of the first 100 soldiers began in 2011. They were stationed at the Counter-LRA Operations Fusion Center (COFC) in Obo , in the Central African Republic , in Dungu , in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in Nzara , South Sudan , and in Entebbe , Uganda . In 2014, four V-22 Ospreys with additional tankers were deployed for the operation. Around 150 soldiers from the Air Force Special Operations Command were now part of the operation. The additional forces are supposed to help with the relocation of troops which are subordinate to the Regional Task Force . As of 2017, the end of the mission is in sight, because the LRA has clearly lost areas and fighters. The number of fighters is said to have fallen below 100.
