Operation Phantom Thunder was a major offensive aimed at restoring order and security in parts of Iraq. Al-Qaida’s range of action should also be restricted. The operation began on June 16, 2007 and includes the following operations: Operation Marne Torch , Operation Arrowhead Ripper, Operation Commando Eagle, and Operation Alljah.

Operation Phantom Thunder is one of the largest offensives since the US invasion of Iraq. The operation was ended on August 14, 2007 and continued from Operation Phantom Strike .

Operations

Operation Marne Torch

On June 16, 2007, the operation began under the code name Marne Torch. The area of ​​operation was in the Iraqi province of Babil . The soldiers of the 2nd and 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division and the 4th Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division were assigned to carry out the operation. The US soldiers received support from Iraqi units of the newly established Iraqi army . The operations focused on the Arab Jabour region and aimed to rid the area of terrorists and other extremists . The coalition forces encountered resistance during their reconnaissance missions and house searches . Operation Marne Torch killed 88 extremists and found numerous shelters. The US military lost 13 soldiers and an OH-58 Kiowa attack helicopter in this partial operation . In addition, 3 Iraqi soldiers were killed in the operation. The Marne Torch partial operation was completed on August 14, 2007.

Operation Arrowhead Ripper

The operation began on June 18, 2007. The area of ​​operation was Diyala Province , with the main fighting being confined to the area around and in the city of Baquba . The aim of the operation was to track down and fight the insurgents and al-Qaida fighters. Since December 2006, the coalition forces and the insurgents fought violently as part of the US-led Diyala Province Campaign. The operation began with a few air strikes against the insurgent positions. Heavy street fighting broke out within the provincial capital Baquba during the first days of the operation . This partial operation lasted until August 19 and caused heavy losses to the insurgent fighters. About 227 fighters were killed in the operation. In addition, several arsenals were found and destroyed in the region. On the side of the US-led coalition forces, 6 US soldiers and 9 Iraqi soldiers died.
