Opisthorchis viverrini is a trematode that iscommonin Thailand , Laos and Malaysia andaffectsthe bile ducts . Infections with Opisthorchis viverrini are a risk factor for cholangiocarcinoma , a tumor of the bile ducts .

Another well-known representative of the order Ophistorchiida is the Chinese liver fluke ( Clonorchis sinensis ). The infestation with it is called clonorchiosis and is also a risk factor for the development of this tumor.

The worm was first discovered in a fish cat ( Prionailurus viverrinus ) and was first described by Jean Poirier as Distomum viverrini in 1886 .
