OVI effect in two different angles

OVI ( engl. : O ptically V ariable I nk = optically variable ink) is a technique for the safety of banknotes to increase and documents. This is a special color that takes on a different shade depending on the viewing angle . OVI colors are usually applied to the substrate using a screen printing process .

technology

The basic component is a colorless substance, interspersed with microscopic and multilayered flakes ( pigments ). These flakes ensure that the color changes from green to brown or green to purple, depending on the viewing angle. For this purpose, the pigments z. B. be aligned in a preferred direction by static charge or magnetic fields.

safety

Because of this color, the parts of the originals printed with OVI technology appear monochrome in color copies or scanned images. However, seen on its own, the OVI technology does not represent a sufficiently high hurdle for professional counterfeiters. This is why this security feature is combined with other technologies such as watermarks , optically variable features ( holograms , kinegrams ), security threads and other security features in euro banknotes .

The advantages of this technology are the moderate costs and the relatively easy integration into the banknotes and documents to be protected.

application

Like most banknotes, euro banknotes (50, 100, 200 and 500 euros in the first series and all euro banknotes in the second series ) also contain an OVI element. In the first series, the lower right number on the back (images of the bridges), which indicates the nominal value, is printed using the OVI technique; in the second series, the face value, which the ECB calls the "emerald number", is printed with OVI technology.

OVI technology is also used for electronic identity cards , passports , visas , chip cards and packaging.
