Opuntia anacantha is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek words άν (an) and ἅκανθα (acantha) for "thorn".

description

Opuntia anacantha grows shrub-like, is extended and occasionally ascending to climbing with the help of adventitious roots . It forms low heaps up to 2.5 meters wide with heights of up to 60 centimeters. The flat, narrow, often lanceolate to elliptical shoot sections are bright dark green. They are 15 to 40 inches long and 3.5 to 7 inches wide. Two to four unequal thorns arise from the small areoles , which can also be missing. They are whitish and 4 to 6 inches long.

The yellowish orange to orange flowers reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters and a length of up to 4 centimeters. The finely hairy fruits are red to purple-purple and up to 5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia anacantha is common in the north of Argentina and Bolivia at altitudes of up to 1000 meters. Pierre Braun and Eddie Esteves also found the species for the first time in Brazil in 2007 (picture credits). The first description was published in 1904 by Carlos Luis Spegazzini . A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Opuntia anacantha var. Anacantha
  • Opuntia anacantha var. Kiska-loro (Speg.) R.Kiesling
  • Opuntia anacantha var. Retrorsa (Speg.) R. Kiesling
  • Opuntia anacantha var. Utkilio (Speg.) R. Kiesling

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
