Baron Johann von Beck (* 1588 in Luxembourg; † August 20, 1648 in Arras ) was Imperial Sergeant General and from 1642 civil and military governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg and the County of Chiny .

Life

He was the son of a messenger on horseback and became a soldier at the age of 13. He later came to Bohemia and in 1618 helped clear up Prague's plans against King Ferdinand . This secured him a quick promotion and the county of Wÿdimb (Wydumb). He distinguished himself in the Battle of Nuremberg in 1632 and contributed significantly to the lifting of the siege of Ingolstadt in the spring of 1632. In 1635 he received Ringsheim Castle , which his son Johann Georg Freiherr von Beck sold again in 1656. For his services he was raised to the nobility in 1637 . On June 7, 1639 he led the advance guard of the troops under the command of Field Marshal Octavio Piccolomini and was able to occupy the fortress there in the Battle of Diedenhofen . From 1642 he was civil and military governor of Luxembourg and Chiny. On November 27, 1639 he bought Beaufort Castle and had the castle of the same name built. In the Battle of Lens in 1648 he again commanded an advance guard. But he was defeated by Marshal Louis II. De Bourbon . In the course of the battle he was captured and mortally wounded and brought to Arras, where he died.
