Opuntia aurea is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet aurea means '(Latin aureus) golden, golden yellow'.
description
Opuntia aurea grows low shrubby, is creeping and spread out on the soil surface. The green, elliptical to egg-shaped, often standing on the edge, shoot sections are 5 to 10 inches long and 3 to 6 inches wide. The areoles are circular, the brown to ocher glochids are up to 3 millimeters long. There are no thorns .
The yellow flowers are 5 to 7.5 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The green fruits are not thorny and reach a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia aurea is common in the United States in the states of Utah and Arizona at altitudes of 1,500 to 1,800 meters.
It was first described in 1833 by Edgar Martin Baxter . Nomenclatory synonyms are Opuntia basilaris var. Aurea (EMBaxter) WTMarshall (1941), Opuntia lubrica var. Aurea (EMBaxter) Backeb. (1958) and Opuntia erinacea var. Aurea (EMBaxter) SLWelsh (1986).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
