Opuntia colubrina is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet colubrina means '(Latin colubrinus) snake-like'.
description
Opuntia colubrina grows as a small shrub. The dark green cylindrical shoot sections are 20 to 40 centimeters long and 2 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The areoles are white. Of the two to three whitish gray thorns up to 3 centimeters long , the middle one is the longest.
The lemon-yellow flowers are up to 5.5 centimeters long. The red fruits are barrel-shaped. They are up to 2.7 inches long and 1.3 inches in diameter.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia colubrina is common in Paraguay and the Argentine provinces of Formosa and Chaco .
It was first described in 1953 by Alberto Castellanos . A nomenclatory synonym is Austrocylindropuntia colubrina (A.Cast.) Backeb. (1958).
