Opuntia crassa is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet crassa means '(Latin crassus) thick'.
description
Opuntia crassa grows shrubby to small tree-shaped, is somewhat branched and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The gray-green to blue-green, often glaucous , obovate to elongated shoot sections are up to 23 centimeters long and up to 18 centimeters wide. The small areoles are felted in dark gray, the small glochids are yellowish to brownish. The one or two needle-like, fine thorns are yellowish or darker and up to 2.5 centimeters long.
The yellowish green flowers are up to 6 centimeters long.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia crassa is originally from Mexico and is now cultivated throughout tropical America.
The first description was in 1819 by Adrian Hardy Haworth .
