Opuntia decumbens is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet decumbens means 'lying down'.

Opuntia decumbens grows as a shrub with twigs that creep over the ground, the tips of which are erect, and reach heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. The green, purplish, soft downy, obovate, elliptical or broadly ovate shoot sections are 7 to 18 centimeters long and 5 to 10 centimeters wide. The abundant glochids are yellow and 2 to 5 millimeters long. The one to three, sometimes missing, thorns are needle-like, protruding, stiff and yellow to gray. They are 0.5 to 7 inches long.

The yellow, reddish tinged flowers reach a length of 4.5 to 5 centimeters. The reddish purple, fluffy fruits are pear-shaped. They are 2.5 to 4 inches long and 1.8 to 3 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia decumbens is common in west, south, and southeast Mexico, as well as in Guatemala , Honduras , Nicaragua, and Costa Rica .

The first description was in 1834 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
