Opuntia eichlamii is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German cactus collector Friedrich Eichlam .
description
Opuntia eichlamii grows tree-shaped with mostly upright branches and reaches heights of 5 to 6 meters. The mostly glaucous , circular to obovate shoot sections are 15 to 20 centimeters long. The small areoles are 3 to 3.5 centimeters apart. The glochids are brown. Of the four to six unequal, spreading, yellow thorns that turn gray with age , some are flattened. They are up to 2 inches long.
The carmine-red flowers have a length of up to 3.5 centimeters. The tuberous, inedible fruits are up to 4 centimeters long.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia eichlamii is common in the Mexican state of Chiapas as well as in Guatemala , Honduras and Nicaragua .
It was first described in 1911 by Joseph Nelson Rose .
