Opuntia hyptiacantha is a species in the genus of Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the family of the cactus (Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet hyptiacantha means 'with bent back spines, clawed spines'. Spanish trivial names are "Nopal Cascarón", "Nopal Memelo" and "Tuna Chaveña"

Opuntia hyptiacantha grows shrubby to tree-shaped with ascending branches and reaches heights of 2 to 5 meters. The obovate, pale green, bare shoot sections are 19 to 30 centimeters long and 12 to 19 centimeters wide. The small areoles are 1.5 centimeters apart. Brownish, 2 to 4 millimeter long glochids and 3 to 8 thorns arise from them . The whitish gray, darkening thorns with age are 5 to 16 millimeters long and protruding. The lower spine is bent back. The flowers are red to orange and reach a length of 6.5 to 7 centimeters. The edible, obovate and bare fruits are red. They are 3 to 4.5 inches long and 2.6 to 3.2 inches in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia hyptiacantha is widespread in central Mexico . The first description was published in 1898 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
