Opuntia lutea is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet lutea means '(Latin luteus) (gold) yellow'.
description
Opuntia lutea grows more or less tree-shaped with several large, sideways spread branches and reaches heights of growth of up to 5 meters. A conspicuous short trunk is formed. The light green, slightly glaucous , obovate to elliptical to elongated shoot sections are 10 to 22 centimeters long. The large brown areoles are about 2 centimeters apart. There are several, needle-like to bristle-like, weak, yellow thorns that are up to 4 inches long.
Stamens and styles protrude from the red, up to 5 centimeters long, slightly opening, more or less tubular flowers . The red fruits are edible and up to 4 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia lutea is distributed in the Mexican state of Chiapas as well as in Guatemala , Honduras and Nicaragua at altitudes of 150 to 900 meters.
It was first described as Nopalea lutea in 1909 by Joseph Nelson Rose . David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1997 in the genus Opuntia .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
