Opuntia nuda is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nuda means '(Latin nudus) naked, bare'.

description

Opuntia nuda grows shrubby and reaches heights of up to 80 centimeters. The intensely green, almost circular shoot sections cork with age. They are rounded at their tip and narrowed at the base. The shoot sections are up to 12 inches long and up to 5 inches wide. The whitish areoles are 2.5 centimeters apart. There are no thorns .

The red flowers appear along the edges of young shoot sections and reach a diameter of up to 3.5 centimeters. The more or less purple-colored fruits have a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia nuda is common in Mexico . The species is only known from culture.

The first description as Nopalea nuda by Curt Backeberg was published in 1962. Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1973 in the genus Opuntia .
