Opuntia pachona is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet pachona means '(from Nahuatl, pacho, woolly, and pachtli, hemp) probably stands for the irregularly arranged and twisted spines'.

description

Opuntia pachona grows shrubby, is richly branched and reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 meters. Usually a conspicuous trunk is formed. The dark green, slightly downy, obovate shoot sections are up to 30 centimeters long and up to 20 centimeters wide. The oval to circular areoles are 2.5 to 3 centimeters apart and have reddish-brown glochids up to 2 millimeters long . The two to five sometimes twisted, spreading, whitish thorns have a darker tip.

The flowers were not described. The fruits are reddish purple in color.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia pachona is common in the Mexican state of Zacatecas .

The first description by David Griffiths was published in 1910. A nomenclatory synonym is Opuntia streptacantha var. Pachona (Griffiths) K. Hammer (1976).
