Opuntia pumila is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Opuntia pumila has the smallest flowers within the genus Opuntia. The specific epithet pumila means 'dwarf'. Spanish common names are "Cardo", "Nopal Cardoso" and "Vixivixio".

Opuntia pumila has a shrubby growth with very low, almost elongated shoots . The cylindrical, somewhat flattened, 6 to 20 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters wide shoot sections are clearly bumpy. From the small areoles arise usually two thorns (sometimes more in old age) that are up to 3 centimeters long.

The yellow, later reddish flowers are up to 1.5 centimeters long. The spherical reddish fruits are up to 1.5 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia pumila is common in central Mexico . The first description was published in 1908 by Joseph Nelson Rose .
