Opuntia saxicola is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Latin words "saxum" for stone and "incola" for residents and means stone residents .
description
Opuntia saxicola grows tree-like to shrubby and reaches a height of 1 to 2 meters. The yellowish-green shoot sections are round, egg-shaped to oblong, 17 to 29 centimeters long, 12 to 20 centimeters wide and 0.5 to 2.2 centimeters thick. The areoles have yellow glochids . The 14 to 30 different types of thorns are yellow, turn brown or reddish with age and are between 3 and 8 centimeters long.
The yellow flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. The green fruits are spherical, 2.5 to 4 centimeters long, reach a diameter between 2.5 and 3.5 centimeters and are covered with thorns and glochids.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia saxicola is widespread in the southwestern part of the Isla Isabela island in the Columbus Archipelago .
It was first described in 1933 by John Thomas Howell .
