Opuntia schumannii is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the German botanist and cactus specialist Karl Moritz Schumann .
description
Opuntia schumannii grows shrubby and forms cushions that reach a height of 1 to 2 meters. The inverted egg-shaped to elongated shoot sections, wavy at the edge, are matt dark green and up to 25 centimeters long. The few, medium-sized areoles are far apart and have few, early sloping glochids . The 2 to 10 dark brown thorns are very unequal. They are a little twisted, flattened, a little spreading and are up to 4.5 centimeters long.
The yellowish- red or orange flowers later turn dark red and reach a length of up to 6 centimeters. The fleshy, dark purple fruits are oval and up to 5 centimeters long.

Opuntia schumannii is common in Colombia and Venezuela .
