Opuntia soederstromiana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the discoverer of the plant, the President of the Central and South American Cabel Campany Ludovic Söderstrom.

Opuntia soederstromiana grows shrubby to tree-shaped, is loosely branched and reaches heights of 0.4 to 4 meters. A trunk of up to 15 centimeters in diameter is formed. The light to dark green bare, not easily sloping, obovate to elongated, occasionally circular shoot sections are 16 to 50 centimeters long and 8 to 20 centimeters wide. Their inconspicuous brown glochids are up to 2 millimeters long. The four to twelve unequal, awl, flattened, spreading, curved and twisted, whitish to yellow thorns turn gray with age. They are 1 to 6 inches long.

The yellow to orange flowers turn reddish with age. They reach a length of 5.5 to 8 centimeters and have a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. The deeply knotted dark red fruits are usually covered with thorns or bristles. They are 3 to 6 inches long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 4 inches.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia soederstromiana is distributed in Ecuador in the provinces of Imbabura , Pichincha , Cotopaxi , Tungurahua and Chimborazo at altitudes of 1000 to 3000 meters.

The first description by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1919.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
