Opuntia salmiana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet salmiana means '(lat. Salmianus) named after Salm-Dyck'.

Opuntia salmiana grows shrubby, is richly branched with several rather weak main shoots and reaches heights of growth of up to 2 meters. The often reddish to slightly purple tinted, non-humped, cylindrical shoot sections have a diameter of up to 1.5 centimeters. The small white areoles are covered with wool. Their glochids are yellow. There are several whitish thorns up to 1.5 centimeters long , which are occasionally missing.
The pale yellow to whitish flowers reach a diameter of 2 to 3.5 centimeters. The club-shaped reddish fruits are (almost) without thorns.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia salmiana is distributed in southwest Brazil , Paraguay , Bolivia and northern Argentina at altitudes of 400 to 1900 meters.
The first description by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer was published in 1837. A synonym is among others Opuntia spegazzinii F.ACWeber (1898).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The future development of the populations is unknown.
