Opuntia stenarthra is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet stenarthra means' (Greek stenos) narrow, short, thin (Greek arthron) member; with thin limbs'.

Opuntia stenarthra grows as a shrub with several creeping to ascending branches up to 2 meters long and can reach heights of up to 80 centimeters. The yellowish green, thin, narrowly elongated shoot sections are 8 to 25 inches long and 2.5 to 7 inches wide. The glochids are brown. Thorns are usually missing. Sometimes there are one, three or five yellowish browns that turn whitish with age and are 0.6 to 3.5 inches long.

The lemon yellow flowers reach a length of up to 3 centimeters and the same diameter. The pear-shaped fruits are up to 2.5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia stenarthra is common in Paraguay in the Department of Concepción and possibly in Brazil in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul .

The first description by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1899.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
