Opuntia tehuantepecana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tehuantepecana indicates the site from the area of ​​Tehuantepec in Mexico. A Spanish common name is "Nopal de Caballo".

Opuntia tehuantepecana grows shrubby with ascending twigs, is usually branched from the base and reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 meters. The green, bare, more or less circular to wide rhomboid shoot sections are 18 to 28 inches long and 14 to 16 inches wide. The elliptical 3 to 5 millimeter long areoles are 6 to 7 centimeters apart and carry dark yellow 2 to 4 millimeters long glochids . The one to four slightly flattened, straight or slightly curved thorns are whitish yellow to dark yellow and 2 to 3.8 centimeters long.

The yellow flowers reach a length of up to 7 centimeters. The obovate fruits are green-yellow. They are 5 to 5.2 inches long and 3.7 to 4 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia tehuantepecana is widespread in the Mexican state of Oaxaca up to an altitude of 200 meters.

The first description by Helia Bravo Hollis was published in 1972. A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia dillenii var. Tehuantepecana Bravo ex S. Arias (1992).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
