The males of the Orange-Polka Dot Bird reach a wing length of 8.0 to 8.7 centimeters and the beak is between 2.0 and 2.5 centimeters long. The males have an orange forehead and an orange skull. This orange is set off from the beak by a very narrow black stripe. A lighter, narrow stripe begins behind the eyes and forms a V-shaped mark on the coat. The coat and the rest of the top of the body are black. The chin and throat are reddish orange, on the chest this turns into a strong yellow orange. The belly is yellowish white, on the sides of the body there are gray, often teardrop-shaped spots. The females are overall much more brownish, on the underside of the body the drop markings are denser and already begin on the throat. The wing covers are lined with orange.
