The Buntbärtlinge ( Capito ) are a genus of the family of American barbets . The representatives of the genus inhabit humid tropical and subtropical forests of South America. Only one species, the teardrop-whiskered bird , also occurs in Central America. Most of the ten species are classified by the IUCN as not endangered ( least concern ). The white-mantled bearded bird is restricted to a very small and now highly fragmented area in northwestern South America. Because of its loss of habitat, the IUCN lists it as endangered . The population is estimated to be fewer than 10,000 individuals. The IUCN classifies the five-colored bearded bird as endangered ( vulnerable ), as its habitat is becoming increasingly smaller due to deforestation. The Loreto bearded bird , which was only discovered in 1996, is also classified as endangered due to its tiny distribution area.

Appearance

Bearded beards reach a height of up to 20 centimeters. Overall, they are somewhat larger than the dwarf bearded mustaches , with which they together make up the American bearded family. They are small, powerfully built birds with a large and powerful head in relation to their size. The beak, which is usually two to three inches long, is strong and pointed. The plumage colors of black, red, orange, yellow and white predominate in most of the bearded men. The olive-backed bearded bird , on the other hand, dominates - apart from the bright red top of the head and the strong orange-colored chest and throat - greenish olive tones. In the other species, the top of the body of the males is black. There is a sexual dimorphism , which is different depending on the species.

Way of life

Bearded beards are usually observed singly or in pairs. Occasionally, however, they also join groups of other bird species. They are mainly fruit-eaters, but also eat insects. The reproductive biology of most species has not yet been adequately studied. One of the better studied birds is the whiskered bird , which is a common bird in South America.
