The Sirabartvogel ( Capito fitzpatricki ) is a bird art from the family of American barbets (Capitonidae). The species was not described until 2012 and named in honor of John W. Fitzpatrick , a curator of the bird collection at the Field Museum of Natural History and director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. So far it is only known from three locations on the eastern slope of the southern Cerros del Sira in the Peruvian region of Ucayali .

Appearance

The sirabeard is very similar to the Loreto bearded bird ( Capito wallacei ) in terms of fletching and morphology , but differs from it in the color of the body sides (blood red compared to yellow-orange in C. wallacei ), the broader and differently colored chest band (purple-red in the Compared to scarlet red in C. wallacei ), the lower black component in the coloration and in the color of the leg plumage (black in C. fitzpatricki compared to gray in C. wallacei ). The purple chest band of the Sirabeard bird is about 22 mm wide in the middle, the scarlet red of the Loreto bearded bird is only about 15 mm. In the sirabeard, a white line runs from the red rump to the tail feathers.

The sirabeard's wings and tail are longer than those of the Loreto bearded bird, and the beak is wider. The wing length is 9.0 to 9.7 cm, the tail length is 5.3 to 6.0 cm and the beak is between 10.6 and 12.0 mm wide.

habitat

The habitat and type locality of the Sirabeard bird consists of moist mountain forests at altitudes of around 1100 meters. The larger trees in its range are about 30 m high and overgrown with epiphytes , ferns and moss. He was not found in the cloud forest on the main ridge of the Sira at 1700 to 2200 meters.

Systematics

The Loreto bearded bird, which occurs in the neighboring region of Loreto, is probably the sister species and thus the closest relative of the Sirabeard bird. Both species presumably emerged from an original species through allopatric speciation .
