Appearance

The teardrop-whiskered bird is a stocky, small bird with a strong bluish beak and a glossy black top. The males of the nominate form reach a wing length of 7.7 to 8.2 centimeters, the beak length averages 2.4 centimeters and the tail measures between 4.5 and 5.4 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements.

The males have a black forehead, black cheeks and ear covers, on the top of the head the black-blue feathers are narrowly lined with brown and have small white spots at the end. The feathers on the nape are a little more brownish. The back and rump are shiny black-blue. The control feathers are dark brown on the upper side and have a bluish sheen when they are freshly moulted. On the underside, the control feathers are brown-blue with brownish horn-colored pen shafts. The throat is white to creamy white, the front breast is yellow to golden yellow. In some individuals, the center of the front chest is even orange gold. On the lower half of the chest and the sides of the body, teardrop-bearded birds are white with large black, teardrop-shaped spots. The silvery-gray to gray-blue beak is long in relation to the body size, the ridge of the beak is slightly curved. Females differ from males mainly on the underside of the body. They have a white throat, chin and front chest.

In the Central American distribution area there is no possibility of confusion with other American bearded birds due to the plumage . In Colombia the distribution areas of the pear-bearded bird, the five-colored bearded bird and the white-necked bearded bird overlap . The white-naped bearded bird differs from the teardrop-bearded bird by its orange-yellow forehead, the five-colored bearded bird has a bright red skull.

Distribution area and way of life

The range of the teardrop-whiskered bird stretches from Panama to the northwest and west of Colombia . It occurs from sea level up to altitudes of about 600 meters, but it has also been observed at an altitude of 1200 meters. The teardrop-whiskered bird is a common bird in Panama.

Teardrop-bearded birds mainly use the treetop region of moist forests. They are also occasionally found in secondary forests. Birds are difficult to watch because they keep quiet while foraging for food. They occasionally join flocks of other bird species. The diet consists mainly of fruits, but they also consume insects to a small extent. The reproductive biology of this species is largely unexplored. According to current knowledge, the breeding season in Panama falls between January and March.
