Orangery Schwerin
The Schwerin Orangery is located in the immediate vicinity of the Schwerin Castle and was built in 1853. It belongs to the Schwerin residential ensemble , which is a candidate for world cultural heritage. Schwerin Castle is also known as the “Neuschwanstein of the North” and is an important building of romantic historicism in Europe. The orangery is located at the foot of the castle in a south-easterly direction.
construction
The orangery is a two-winged building, the roof serves as a terrace, it is located in the axis of the main tower of the castle and is open to the lake. The inner courtyard is planted, to the south-east there is an arcade and the statue of the bull-taming Heracles attached to the center of the arcade. The shore of Lake Schwerin is a few meters away. Palm garden and shell fountain, several accessible roof terraces and the sea grotto are part of the orangery. The Victoria statues on the roof of the orangery are listed as architectural monuments.
The orangery has single glazing in a thin frame made of steel, the window construction shows sparingly stylistic elements of historicism. The ceiling consists of a steel construction with double T-beams , which are filled with vaulted masonry as a cap ceiling . The main room has underfloor heating.
The outside stairs from the terraces to the green spaces were rebuilt after 1994 with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection . The sheltered location means that plants can also be kept in the facility that usually cannot thrive in these latitudes. There is a palm garden around the arcade.
Two Victoria statues and a sundial are located directly above the orangery. The sundial is a copy of a sandstone sculpture in the form of a prism from 1844 with a figure of Jupiter enthroned. The side-mounted Victorias are about life-size.
use
From the time the palace was built until today, the orangery has been used to house the garden plants during the cold season.
In the meantime it was used for other purposes, so it was the storage room and gym of the school for kindergarten teachers during the GDR period and from 1961 to 1994 the polytechnic museum . Since the outdoor area was only sparsely planted, the orangery was not used as such, the plants were hardy and remained outdoors, which enabled the indoor spaces to be used all year round.
The orangery is currently used for gastronomic purposes in the summer months.
