After the political turning point in 1990, the museum had to vacate its place in the palace and in 1996 it was on the verge of collapse. The country had released it from its sponsorship without first establishing a corresponding rescue company. The support association for the Technical State Museum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e. V. The provision of financial resources by the Ministry of Culture and the founding of the sponsoring association ultimately saved the museum. Since then, the sponsoring association has also received broad political support.

In 1997 the Technical State Museum moved to the Schwerin Marstall . In addition, a branch was opened in Wismar in August 2003 . This was the first step in moving the museum to Wismar. There, with new buildings and a new concept, a mixture of science center and technical museum was built under the name phanTECHNIKUM . The exhibition of the Technical State Museum in the Schwerin Marstall was closed at the beginning of 2011.

Marstall Schwerin

In the exhibition, traffic technology took up the largest part. While shipbuilding has been known to be formative for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for centuries, there was also railroad and automobile construction in the state. The aircraft industry had dominated the entire economy in the first half of the 20th century. Fokker , Arado , Heinkel , Dornier and Bachmann were resident. At Fokker in Schwerin-Görries, during the First World War, fighter planes were built for the imperial German air forces . Heinkel, Arado, Bachmann and Dornier have built both civil and military machines since the 1920s. During the Second World War, all factories built fighter jets for the Air Force .

The machines for generating energy were among the richest collection items in the exhibition. Many models and originals could be seen in action. The exhibits ranged from the horizontal single-piston steam engine from the turn of the century to the six-cylinder diesel engine of the sailing training ship Gorch Fock from 1953. Communication technology and household technology completed the program.

Technology show Wismar

The exhibition in the Wismarer Glashaus in Bürgerpark shows, among other things, a number of vintage cars that were built in Eisenach after 1945 , such as the EMW 340 and the IFA F9 . In addition, the history of aircraft, wagon and shipbuilding in the Hanseatic city is presented. In addition to the originals, various models and replicas can be seen. Closed since 2012.

The Technical State Museum is breaking new ground with its phanTECHNIKUM project . So far, the non-profit operating company has looked after the exhibitions in the Schwerin Marstall and Wismar Citizens Park. The exhibition in the Schwerin Marstall has been closed since the beginning of 2011. It was completely cleared out and the exhibits were stored in Wismar until the opening of the phanTECHNIKUM.

The phanTECHNIKUM combines both exhibitions from Schwerin and Wismar under one roof, complements them and presents them in a new, contemporary form. An adventure museum has been built on the former barracks site in Wismar , which quickly established itself as a new visitor attraction.

The four elements fire, water, air and earth structure the subject areas of the exhibition.

The phanTECHNIKUM has been open to visitors since December 1st, 2012.

Events and projects

Solar vehicles for the north German solar car race
  • The Oll bicycle race came into being in 2001 after the Schweriner Volkszeitung called it on who has the oldest bicycle in the area? . A race and various disciplines were held with those interested. Due to its success, the event was repeated annually. Various competitions took place such as slalom driving, races and skill driving. In addition to the high wheels , mini bikes, wheel and other curiosities and special wheels went onto the track. Bicycles with an auxiliary engine started in a special ranking.
  • The museum rally for vintage cars also took place for the first time in 2001. Cars and motorcycles mainly from GDR production started. First, the participants met at the stables, visited the exhibition and then organized a parade with a presentation of the participants, whereupon the audience chose their favorite. This was followed by the exit with special tests.
  • The north German solar car race is a joint event of the Technisches Landesmuseum e. V. and solar initiative MV e. V., which took place for the first time in 2001. Children and young people have the task of designing the fastest and best solar mobile . About four to five months before the race, the Technisches Landesmuseum e. V. distributed kits that contain four solar cells as well as a motor and gearbox . While the transmission can be improved and changed by the students, the specified motors and solar cells must definitely be used to start. However, there are a number of tricks you can use to improve your mobile, for example in terms of material, drive or housing. The constructed mobiles then compete against each other in a race.
  • Since 2005, the Technical State Museum has also been holding a soap box race in the Bürgerpark in Wismar. This race, organized by the Technical State Museum and Karstadt Wismar, is carried out in cooperation with schools in Wismar.
  • As a supplement to school lessons, for example in physics, the museum offers project lessons in the areas of power generation, flight technology and history, and computer technology. Theoretical connections should be conveyed and functional principles should be illustrated using models.
