Orangie Ray Hubbard
"Orangie" Ray Hubbard (born February 23, 1933 - September 1, 2011 ) was an American country and rockabilly musician.
Life
Hubbard started his career in Barbourville , Kentucky in the mid-1950s . In a talent competition organized by the local radio station, he won a record release on Dixie Records . In November 1957, his rockabilly song Sweet Love was released on a Dixie record; On the B-side was If I had a Nickle for Every Time Your Untrue by David Lundy, who had also entered the talent competition.
Hubbard then moved to Cincinnati , Ohio , where he worked in an automobile factory during the day and performed in clubs and bars in the evening. His repertoire included country and rockabilly pieces. In 1959 he played another single for El Rader's Lucky Records label from Cincinnati. Look What I Found / Is She Sore was published in 1959, but only got a bad rating from the music magazine Billboard in the September issue . In the 1960s, Hubbard moved from rockabilly to country and was signed to King Records in Cincinnati in the middle of the decade . But when the success of his single Big Cat became apparent, label owner and producer Syd Nathan died , so that nothing came of Hubbard's record success .
In 1979, songs by Hubbard from the 1950s were first re-released in the USA on the LP Cincinnati Rock & Roll 1950s . Since then, his recordings have appeared on more than ten other compilations and are now some of the classics of the rockabilly genre. Hubbard was still active and performed at country and rockabilly festivals. He died in 2011 at the age of 78.
