history
Dixie EPs
Starday's owners Don Pierce and Pappy Daily launched the Dixie Records label in early 1956. Initially, the label was specially designed for extended plays . Musicians who were under contract with Starday covered current country hits (so-called soundalikes ), which were then released on the EPs of the Dixie label. The records were then distributed via the Chicago- based Stewart Sales Company in the mail order system and, among other things, also sold via radio stations in the Texas-Mexican border area. The same approach had been used by producer Carl Burckhardt in Cincinnati and Tops Records in Los Angeles since the early 1950s .
By 1959, at least 39 EPs had been released. Musicians who recorded soundalikes for Dixie include well-known artists such as George Jones, Jimmie Skinner, Roger Miller, Jimmie Dean, Sleepy LaBeef, Eddie Noack, Leon Payne and many more. In these three years a significant number of musically interesting cover versions were made.

Starday Package Deal
Since 1955, Starday has been producing records to order for local musicians without a record deal. Don Pierce from Four Star Records in Pasadena brought this concept to Starday and introduced it there under the name Starday Package Deal . The musicians sent their self-recorded tapes to Starday, stating their label name and the number of records. Starday took over the production of the plates and sent them back to the client, who could sell them on their own. In return, Starday reserved the right to publish song material on the main label at will.
If an artist did not provide a label name, the recordings were automatically published under the label name Starday, and from 1958 Dixie was used for this type of publication. Package deal releases were listed in a separate label catalog that began at number 500 in 1955 and ended at over 1100 in the late 1960s. What began in 1955 as a small sideline business has become an important source of income over the years thanks to the triumphant advance of rock'n'roll and the success of the 45-rpm record.
Aftermath
In the 1970s, a total of seven LPs with the rarest rockabilly recordings were released by Dixie Records. Due to the low number of copies, records from this label are considered extremely valuable and reach a high price among collectors.
