history
Under the direction of Matthias Göttemann, the oratorio choir developed from the church choir of the Martin Luther Church between 1994 and 2000 . Through project-related development and performance of well-known cantatas and oratorios, the number of singers grew from originally 25 to over 100 during this period.
Since 2001 the oratorio choir Würzburg has been active as a free concert choir in Würzburg and outside of it. The choir is still connected to the Martin Luther Church and thus a. the church music life and church services with. As an organizational form, the non-profit Würzburger Sängerverein 1847 eV was behind the concert choir until 2017. This was founded by the then Würzburg city treasurer Valentin Becker ; Today it is the oldest still existing choir in the city. The oratorio choir has been an independent form of organization since 2018.
The singers from all over the region come together for weekly rehearsals and occasional rehearsal Saturdays in order to prepare the major concerts with sacred and secular oratorios. The choir appears in various churches and halls in Würzburg, z. B. in the cath. Augustinian and Franciscan Church , the seminary church of St. Michael , in the great hall of the University of Music Würzburg , the Neubaukirche , in the Congress Centrum Würzburg , the Vogel Convention Center or in the Protestant St. John's Church .
With its concert performances, the oratorio choir Würzburg has taken a leading place in the cultural life of Würzburg.
So far the choir has given guest concerts in the Kaisersaal Ebrach , in Haßfurt , in Königsberg i. Bay. , in the pilgrimage church Maria Limbach , in Volkach , in Lindesberg (Sweden) , in Zinnowitz (Usedom). In May 2008 a concert tour to France took place in the Würzburg twin town Caen , in May 2010 and 2015 the choir traveled to Grignan .
The Oratorienchor Würzburg worked with the following orchestras: Orchestra Sinfonietta Würzburg (consisting of advanced students), Orchestra Camerata Würzburg (concertmaster: Sören Uhde), Prague Philharmonic KSO, Thuringia Philharmonic Gotha , Nuremberg Symphony and Vogtland Philharmonic.
On the 100th anniversary of the Compiègne armistice (1918) the choir gave a performance of Johannes Brahms' triumphal song op. 55 in the Sankt-Johannis-Kirche in Würzburg with the participation of the Würzburg Orchestra . Sven Fürst (bass) was the soloist.
