Valentin Eduard Becker (born November 20, 1814 in Würzburg ; † January 25, 1890 there ) was a German city treasurer and composer .

On April 15, 1847, he founded the Würzburg Singers' Association with 45 singers , which was named after him in 2005.

He wrote the patriotic song You shouldn't have him, the free German Rhine , which around 1848 (for example via so-called song tables) also found its way into popular songs. In 1861 he set the text of the Frankenlied by Joseph Victor von Scheffel to music .

Honors

In his honor, the city of Bad Brückenau has been awarding the Valentin Becker Prize every three years since 1953 . His hometown Würzburg, where he also worked as city treasurer, honors its citizens with a monument in the Ringpark and the Valentin-Becker-Straße named after him.
