Frankenlied
The Frankenlied , also called the song of the Franks , is the unofficial national anthem of Franconia and one of the most famous student songs . In the administrative districts of Lower Franconia , Middle Franconia and Upper Franconia, it is also sung on official occasions, mostly after the German national anthem and the Bavarian anthem . The text is by Joseph Victor von Scheffel (1859), the melody by Valentin Eduard Becker (1861).
Emergence
Scheffel wrote the wandering song as literary testimony to wanderlust in the summer of 1859. At that time he stayed for several weeks in the Banz monastery near Staffelberg .
There are several different versions on the Internet as well as in songbooks, most of which differ only in small details. The lyrics also contain inconsistencies in content. Thus the winery patron actually the Holy Urban , the Holy Kilian is considered the patron of the Frankish lands. Nor is there any holy Veit of Staffelstein , but probably near a St. Vitus from Ansberg ; but it could also be one of the fourteen emergency helpers of the neighboring pilgrimage church Vierzehnheiligen . The actual justification for Saint Veit von Staffelstein probably results from the history of the Staffelberg. Hermits lived there from 1696 to 1929 and performed their pious service there. Von Scheffel created an immortal memorial to the hermit Ivo Hennemann with his song. In Scheffel's text it is described how he climbs up to “Veit” (see verse 4) and drinks his well-stored wine (see verse 6). The St. Vitus u patron saint. a. the brewer and winemaker.

Franconian addition
The popularly added stanzas seven, eight and nine by Gerd Backert, Hermann Wirth and Karl Frisch, which musically and poetically criticize the annexation of Franconia by Bavaria caused by Napoleon, are not an official part of the Frankenlied. In anti-Bavarian versions of the Frankenlied, which contain the derisive name “Rucksack-Bavaria”, the anger of some Franks over this appropriation and the robbery of Franconian cultural assets is expressed. However, they do not represent a folk good in the sense of a folk song or even a hymn. The distribution is, if at all, very regionally or politically motivated.

Other uses of the melody
In the Swabian Albverein , the Albverein song is sung to the same melody on official occasions . The text begins with the words “Now put this symbol on your hat, you Alb club comrades”. The text comes from the founding member Eugen Nägele and was presented in June 1890 in the "Blätter des Schwäbischen Albverein".
