Orbis Terrarum

Orbis Terrarum ( International Journal of Historical Geography of the Ancient World , French Revue de geographie historique du Monde Ancien , English Journal of Historical Geography of the Ancient World , Italian Rivista di geografia storica del mondo antico ) is a scientific journal. It connects the subject areas of the ancient sciences with those of the geosciences, especially geography. The Orbis Terrarum is the publication organ of the " Ernst Kirsten Society . International Society for Historical Geography of the Old World ”.

Orbis Terrarum, founded by Eckart Olshausen , has been published annually by Franz Steiner Verlag in Stuttgart since 1995 . The topics of the essays cover all cultures of antiquity in terms of time and space, but the contributions to antiquity take up the greatest amount due to the sources alone. In terms of content, the range of topics extends from dealing with the ancient authors in connection with geographical conditions, through topics such as deportations within the Old World, the view of "the foreign" in antiquity, to the analysis of historical geocatastrophes, the interactions between humans and the environment, as Topographical problems are also part of the content of the journal.

After the annual rhythm could initially be adhered to for a long time, there were major delays in the 2000s. Volume 9 now covered the period from 2003 to 2007, Volume 10 from 2008 to 2011 and Volume 11 from 2012/13. Since volume 12 (2014), the annual publication cycle has been reached again.
