The Order of the Moor ( Italian Ordine del Moretto ) was a papal order for the presidents of the Accademia di San Luca art academy .

Award and history

The Order of the Moor was founded by Pope Pius VII on September 23, 1806 through the Breve Illud soepe numero . The incumbent president of the papal Accademia di San Luca in Rome received the medal and was allowed to continue to wear it even after leaving office. Since only the presidents of the painters' academy were allowed to wear the Order of the Moor, contemporaries doubted whether the category of a knightly order was appropriate. Even if the term "medal" is used, it was also an official insignia .

The order has not been awarded since the end of the Papal States in 1870.

Description and way of carrying

The medal consists of an eight-pointed white cross with a gold border. In the middle is a white medallion with the head of a Moor, also rimmed with gold . The cross hangs on a laurel wreath , which in turn is attached to a red ribbon with two black stripes.

The medal is worn on the left side of the chest. In addition, there was also a separate uniform .
