Order of the Half Moon

The Ottoman Order of the Half Moon ( Hilâl Nişanı ), also known as the Crescent Order, was created as an order of knights as early as 1453 after the capture of Constantinople .

It was renewed by Selim III. The occasion was the victory over the French fleet in the sea battle at Abukir off the coast of the Ottoman Empire . The order was newly established in 1799, but had already been presented in advance in the form of a brilliant execution out of gratitude to Admiral Nelson . The order was not complete until 1801. The European orders of knights were a role model, despite their rejection of Christian origins. The order had three classes.

Order decoration

A round golden red enamelled shield on which the Turkish coat of arms in the green shield shows the waning silver crescent . The obverse otherwise shows a shining star with a sickle-shaped moon on the edge. Both parts are made of diamonds. The reverse bore the name Selim III. in the middle.

Ribbon and way of wearing

The ribbon was wide and red. The first class wore the award as a sash over the right shoulder to the left hip. A breast star was one of them. This was like an embroidered star in the view of a shining sun. In the middle of this is the silver crescent moon and a star. The way of carrying the second class wears a smaller order decoration without a breast star . The last class decorates only in the buttonhole. The medal star was in gold, but the applied crescent moon and star were made of silver.
