Horace-François-Bastien, comte Sébastiani de la Porta (born November 10, 1772 in La Porta near Bastia in Corsica , † July 21, 1851 ) was a French diplomat, statesman and marshal of France .

Life

Sebastiani joined the French army in 1792 and was promoted to chief de bataillon in 1796 and to colonel in 1799 .

After having rendered essential services to Napoleon in the coup d'état of 18th Brumaire as commander of the Dragoons , he attended the Battle of Marengo in 1800 , after the Peace of Amiens went as Napoleon's envoy to Constantinople , Egypt , Syria and the Ionian Islands and entered 1803 as Général de brigade back into the army.

Seriously wounded in the Battle of Austerlitz , he was then promoted to Général de division and in May 1806 sent as envoy to Constantinople, where he met Selim III. to declare war on Russia and rejected the efforts of the English Admiral Duckworth .

1809-11 he was in Spain , won at Ciudad Real and Almonavid and conquered Granada and Málaga . In 1812 he led the vanguard of the Grande Armée and entered Moscow with the first French troops .

In 1813 he was wounded in the Battle of Leipzig , fought his way through the Battle of Hanau with his division, then had to cover the left bank of the Rhine at the head of the 5th Army Corps, but had to retreat to Champagne in 1814 and stood out at the top the guard cavalry at Reims and in the battle of Arcis-sur-Aube .

After Napoleon's abdication, despite his submission, he did not get a job and entered the Chamber in 1815 during the reign of the Hundred Days as a deputy of the Aisne department. With Lafayette and other members, he went to the camp of the allies after the battle of Waterloo to broker peace and, since his efforts in favor of Napoleon were in vain, embarked for England .

In 1816 he returned to France and was given half pay. Elected to the Chamber in 1819, he sided with the liberal opposition. After the July Revolution of 1830 he was entrusted with the Ministry of the Navy on August 11 and that of Foreign Affairs on November 17.

Resigned April 1, 1834, he became envoy to Naples and 1835–40 to London . Appointed Marshal of France , he only took part in the negotiations of the Chamber in which he had represented Ajaccio since 1835 . He died on July 21, 1851.

He was married to Antoinette-Françoise-Jeanne de Coigny and had one daughter. His daughter Fanny Altaria Rosalba was murdered on August 17, 1847 by her husband, the Duke of Praslin .

Sébastiani's brother was Jean-André-Tiburce Sébastiani .

Honors

His name is entered on the triumphal arch in Paris in the 34th column.
