The Order for Military Merit (fr. Ordre du Mérite militaire ) was founded by decree on March 22, 1957 by the French President René Coty and was intended to serve as an award for reservists in the French armed forces in peacetime . The award was presented on the proposal of the Defense Minister . The award of the Order for Military Merit was discontinued in 1963 as part of the reorganization of the French religious system and the Foundation of the National Order of Merit .

The order consists of three classes

Order decoration

The medal is a blue enamelled pointed cross on which a square on top rests. In it you can see Marianne's head turned to the right, wearing a helmet. The inscription REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE (Republic of France) on the top two straight lines . On the reverse the two-line inscription MERITE MILITAIRE (military merit ). Officer's and knight's cross are without enamel .

Carrying method

The commander's cross is worn as a neck medal . The medals of the officers and knights on the ribbon on the left side of the chest, with a rosette on the ribbon of the officer's cross .

The ribbon is ultramarine blue with a wide red central and a narrow white border.
